Accessibility
Built to be
usable by everyone.
Many people using this site are managing a long-term condition, and some have diabetes-related visual impairment. That shaped how it was built.
Standard
This website aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA.
What has been done
- Contrast. Body text and interface colours are chosen to meet or exceed the 4.5:1 contrast ratio, in both the light and dark sections of the site.
- Keyboard. Every interactive element — navigation, dropdown, tabs, publication accordions, form fields and floating contact buttons — can be reached and operated with a keyboard, with a visible focus ring.
- Skip link. A skip-to-main-content link is the first focusable item on every page.
- Structure. Headings run in order, landmarks are used for header, navigation, main and footer, and the current page is marked in the navigation.
- Tabs and accordions. Built with ARIA tab and disclosure patterns, including arrow-key navigation between tabs.
- Forms. Every field has a visible label, required fields are marked in text as well as colour, errors appear beside the field they relate to, and a linked error summary receives focus after a failed submission.
- Images. Meaningful images carry descriptive alternative text; decorative images are hidden from assistive technology. The schematic map has a text description.
- Touch targets. Interactive controls are at least 44×44 pixels, with spacing between them.
- Motion. Animation is used sparingly, and is disabled entirely when your device requests reduced motion.
- Zoom and text size. Layouts use relative units and reflow without horizontal scrolling; page zoom is not disabled.
- Colour. No information is conveyed by colour alone.
- Without JavaScript. All content remains readable and navigable if scripts fail to load.
Known limitations
- The consultation map is a schematic orientation diagram rather than an interactive map. Its content is also available as the text list of locations beside it.
- Publication titles are long by nature, and some are unavoidably dense to read.
- Where a publisher website is linked by DOI, that external site accessibility is outside our control.
